Designing Enduring Performance Icons

Category Architecture Through Craft

Responsible for women’s bottoms across lululemon’s largest business, this work reflects the development of category-defining product systems grounded in athlete insight, material innovation, and precision construction.

Through firsthand research with athletes and communities globally, real movement needs were translated into patented solutions and scalable platforms across run, yoga, training, and the brand’s first swim category.

The examples below demonstrate how research, design judgment, and craft combine to build enduring product ecosystems at scale.

A selection of $100M+ legging franchises architected, fit, and commercialized—longstanding foundations of Lululemon’s pant wall that defined the performance bottoms category for nearly a decade.

Fast & Free

Fast and Free was engineered as the market’s most refined running legging of its time—minimal in construction, uncompromising in performance.

Defined by ultra-fine 4.88 mm flatlock seams, elongated linework, a modern handfeel, subtle back storage, and discreet reflective detailing for low-light runs.

In Movement

In Movement introduced a new era of design DNA by elevating logo expression beyond the traditional horseshoe mark, transforming it into a modern, luxury signature that wrapped the female form in refined Lululemon line language.

Tasked with redefining brand expression through construction and linework, the design established a lasting visual system that reshaped how branding lived within the bottoms category.

Train Times

Train Times was first to market in disrupting the straight waistband, re-engineering training legging architecture to flow seamlessly from waistband into leg line design.

Built for gym, HIIT, and high-intensity movement, the innovation reset category standards and became one of the most widely copied constructions still influencing the market today.

ONE

THE
"NO INSEAM" INSEAM

Born from listening to athletes with strong, muscular legs, the no-inseam design removes the traditional inner seam to eliminate thigh abrasion and pilling—improving comfort, durability, and maintaining a clean, uninterrupted silhouette during long-distance movement.

BONDED 3 LAYER QUICK DRY WAISTBAND

The reduced-layer waistband was engineered to eliminate heat and excess weight at the lower back, replacing bulk with precision bonding for stability, breathability, and faster dry time. Integrated storage is fully built into the system—removing the need for an external running belt while keeping essentials secure, accessible, and unobtrusive.

THREE

THE

"NO CUFF"

CUFF

An internal cuff construction engineered to balance airflow and containment—redefining jogger architecture to deliver a more polished, away-from-body silhouette while supporting movement. This re-engineered the category with a female-first approach, enabling versatility beyond performance without sacrificing function.

FOUR

BUILT IN

RUNNING

MASK

An integrated cold-weather solution designed to provide protection when needed and disappear when not, eliminating reliance on external accessories. The system was built directly into warm-weather gear for greater specialization and finished with antimicrobial treatment to support repeat wear and durability.

FIVE

NO SHOW

CHAMOIS
BIKE SHORT

A concealed chamois system delivering cycling protection without visual compromise—the first of its kind to be engineered this way—expanding cross-training functionality within the tight category.

SIX

MODULUS TECHNOLOGY

Laser-cut adhesive articulation engineered to flex and recover with the body—advancing sheet-adhesive construction to be ergonomic for movement and the female form while enabling bonded waistbands to mold precisely and retain structure.

Visibility as a Performance System

Developed through research with lululemon’s innovation team, this work examined how runners are seen — and missed — across urban environments, seasonal light shifts, and points of articulation in motion.

By mapping where the body is most exposed to impact risk and least visible during movement, reflective placement was re-engineered as an integrated design system.

This approach reframed visibility from utilitarian application into intentional performance design — elevating safety, aesthetics, and adoption, and helping shift the category beyond male-dominated or purely technical solutions.

Building a New Performance Lane

This collection marked lululemon’s first entry into true performance swim, developed in close collaboration with professional surfers and grounded in luxury-level craft. Conceived as “performance swim with beauty,” the work balanced function under real surf conditions with elevated materiality, proportion, and finish.

Every element was considered end-to-end — from adjustable tie systems engineered to stay secure through movement, to fabrications, prints, and trims selected for both durability and refinement. Developed and fit in Asia, this work established lululemon’s first credible swim foundation, defining a new category lane and creating the conditions for the business to expand meaningfully beyond its core.
